Building Money-Smart Kids, One Story at a Time
The choices children make about money may be small today—but the habits and confidence they build can last a lifetime.
UPLIFT’s Money Tales sessions introduce students in grades 3–5 to important financial concepts through stories, conversation, and hands-on learning.
The program uses books from Sheila Bair’s Money Tales series, which introduces real-world financial concepts through imaginative stories and memorable characters kids can understand.
What Students Learn
FINANCIAL SESSIONS KIDS UNDERSTAND

Money Tales gives students a kid-friendly way to explore questions they are already beginning to encounter:
-
What is the difference between saving and spending?
-
How do you decide between a need and a want?
-
What happens when you borrow money?
-
How can you work toward a financial goal?
-
How can you recognize an offer that may be too good to be true?
By starting these conversations early, students begin building the vocabulary, confidence, and decision-making skills that can support them throughout their lives.
WHY START EARLY?
Children become aware of money long before they have a bank account or paycheck.
Introducing financial concepts early gives kids a foundation for understanding the choices they will encounter as they grow. Money Tales creates a comfortable, kid-friendly space to ask questions, learn new vocabulary, practice decision-making, and begin developing healthy habits around money.
It’s not about making kids financial experts.
It’s about giving them the tools to become thoughtful, confident decision-makers.
STORIES THAT BRING FINANCIAL LITERACY TO LIFE
Written by Sheila Bair, former Chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Money Tales series uses colorful stories to help children understand financial basics.
Across the series, characters navigate topics including saving, borrowing, entrepreneurship, contracts, scams, changing prices, and other real-world money decisions.
UPLIFT incorporates these stories into its Money Tales sessions to help make financial concepts approachable, memorable, and fun for elementary students.
KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING AT HOME
Some of the most valuable money lessons happen in everyday life.
Parents and guardians can continue the conversation at home with simple ways to reinforce the concepts students explore during Money Tales.
