About the Program
In partnership with Lucky Duck Foundation, UPLIFT San Diego connects compassionate volunteers with individuals transitioning out of homelessness. Through meaningful one-to-one friendships, the program fosters connection, builds confidence, and reduces isolation.
Together, We Build Community
A safe place to live is only part of the journey. Meaningful relationships are essential to healing, belonging, and long-term success. The Be a Friend Program helps neighbors build lasting connections that reduce isolation, foster hope, and create stronger communities for everyone. Whether you're looking for a friend or ready to become one, there's a place for you at UPLIFT San Diego. Friendship changes lives—for both people involved.
Become a Friend
A few hours each month can make a lasting impact.
As a UPLIFT Friend, you'll be matched one-on-one with someone rebuilding their life after homelessness. You don't need special skills or experience—just kindness, compassion, and a commitment to showing up.
Volunteers agree to:
-
Connect with their matched participant twice each month
-
Meet in person at least once each month
-
Complete a background check and Mandated Reporter Training
-
Be at least 18 years old
Your friendship can help someone feel welcomed, supported, and connected as they build a brighter future.
Looking for Support & Connection?
Moving into stable housing is a major milestone, but it can also feel lonely. If you're looking for someone to encourage you, listen without judgment, and share life's everyday moments, we'd love to help.
Your UPLIFT Friend is someone who will:
-
Check in with you regularly
-
Meet with you at least once each month
-
Offer encouragement and companionship
-
Help you feel more connected to your community
Participation is free, voluntary, and designed to support your journey toward long-term stability.
