UPLIFT finds its true strength in Kids at Heart. This is a program that offers tutoring and mentoring for low-income and racially diverse children in grades kindergarten through 12th. Many of the children struggle in school because of the language barrier and poverty. Children come from the neighborhoods of Little Italy, Golden Hills, Sherman Heights, Mid-City and City Heights. Tutoring takes place at local churches, community centers and on school campuses.

Volunteer tutors provide not only academic assistance but also encouragement and tips for success in school. Many of our tutors come as groups from churches throughout San Diego County. Tutors find that the children bring a new sense for friendship, awareness and purpose that is intrinsically rewarding. In addition to weekly tutoring sessions there is a comprehensive enrichment program. During the school year there are educational field trips, theatre and sports activities. During the summer we collaborate with local churches to offer Vacation Bible Schools.

Become a Tutor with Kids at Heart!
Join the Kids at Heart (KAH) team as a volunteer tutor and help brighten a child’s future. About one hour each week, tutors work one-on-one with students to improve reading skills, complete homework assignments, and play educational games. Most of the KAH students are in elementary school and live in San Diego’s inner-city communities. Tutor Requirements:
• Be positive role model for KAH students
• Complete reference check (Fingerprinting)
• Commit to spend a minimum of 1 to 1-½ hours/week with KAH student
• Attend one mandatory tutor orientation meeting
• Tutor and guide KAH student for duration of program
