Four critical factors significantly affect the growing need for additional funding to support UPLIFT's programs. First, San Diego's inner city population's needs are growing in size and diversity; second, increasingly more non profits are competing for government and philanthropic funds; third, traditional forms of funding are becoming smaller and less reliable; and fourth, new for-profit businesses are competing with non profits to serve community needs.
The ultimate benefit of our programs is to improve health, literacy and self-sufficiency of some of the inner city's most vulnerable populations. As we work toward this goal, we seek to:
Significantly reduce isolation, physical deterioration and emotional distress/crisis of the growing low-income senior citizen population who live in subsidized inner city housing by creating fellowship opportunities and group activities through weekly outings to local attractions, cultural events and luncheons.
Significantly accelerate the educational progress and improved literacy of low-income and racially diverse school-aged inner city children by providing more tutors and learning resources.
Provide assistance to homeless ex-offenders to become reintegrated into the world of work with job placement by providing resources and transportation necessary for getting placed in jobs.
